Our recommended device
We recommend an Android TV box such as the Onn 4K (Amlogic S905X4, 4GB RAM). The steps below work the same on an Android TV box: plug it into your TV, connect it to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then start at Step 1. See recommended devices.
Quick start: install SurfPlayer
In Downloader, type the code 5188273 (or streamsurfers.net/app) to install SurfPlayer, our own app, and sign in with the username and password we sent you (no server address needed). It takes about 10 minutes.
This guide sets up SurfPlayer, our own app, on a Google TV, an Android TV, or an Onn / Android TV box, one small step at a time. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Go slowly, and tick off each step as you go.
SurfPlayer works on Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, Android TV boxes, and Sony, Hisense, TCL and Philips Android/Google TVs.
Before you start, have these ready
• Your TV or box switched on, showing its home screen. A new box needs to be plugged into the TV’s HDMI port and its power first.
• The remote for the TV or box.
• Internet working: Wi-Fi or a network cable (if YouTube plays, you’re fine).
• Your welcome email (or WhatsApp message) from StreamSurfers with your username and password. Keep it open on your phone or write them down.
• About 20 minutes when you won’t be rushed.
The remote buttons you’ll use
• The arrows or round ring: press up, down, left or right to move around. Whatever is highlighted (lit up or outlined) is what you’re on.
• The middle button: the round button in the centre of the arrows (it may say OK). It means “choose this”.
• The Back button: an arrow that curves to the left. It goes back one screen.
• The Home button: a little house (or a circle on some remotes). It takes you to the home screen. If you get lost, press it and start that part again.
Part 1: Get the Downloader app
- Press the Home button.
- On a Google TV (the home screen has tabs along the top like For you, Movies, Shows, Apps): move up to Search (the magnifying glass at the top left) or to the Apps tab, and press the middle button.
On an Android TV or Android TV box: find the Google Play Store app (a coloured triangle) in your list of apps, and open it with the middle button. - Choose the search box, and with the on-screen keyboard type Downloader. You can also press the microphone button on the remote and say “Downloader”.
- Pick Downloader by AFTVnews (an orange picture) and press the middle button.
- Choose Install. Wait about a minute.
Looks different? if it says Open, you already have it. Carry on to Part 2. - Press the Home button.
Part 2: Turn on Developer options and allow Downloader
This lets Downloader install SurfPlayer. You only do it once. Many Android TV boxes (and Onn devices) don’t need this: if you can’t find these menus, skip to Part 3. Your TV will simply ask you to allow Downloader during the install, and we show you what to press there.
- Open Settings: on most Google TVs it’s the gear (small cog wheel) at the top right of the home screen. On other TVs, look for a gear in the top row or press the remote’s Settings button.
- Choose System, then About.
Looks different? on some TVs it’s Device Preferences → About. - Move down the list to Android TV OS build (sometimes just Build). Highlight it.
- Press the middle button 7 times, at a steady pace.
What you’ll see: a message saying “You are now a developer” (or “you are already a developer”, which is fine too). - Press the Back button until you’re at the main Settings list.
- Choose Apps, then Security & restrictions, then Unknown sources.
Looks different? on some TVs it’s Install unknown apps, or under Device Preferences → Security & restrictions. - Find Downloader in the list and press the middle button so its switch turns on.
- Press the Home button.
Part 3: Install SurfPlayer with the code 5188273
- Open Downloader (from the Apps tab or your list of apps).
- The first time it opens, a few messages may pop up. Choose Allow or OK on each one.
- Highlight the white box near the top (it says something like “Enter a URL, search term or short code”) and press the middle button.
- Type the number 5188273. Check each number carefully.
- Move to Go and press the middle button.
What you’ll see: a bar filling up while SurfPlayer downloads.
Looks different? if the code doesn’t work, type streamsurfers.net/app instead and press Go. - If a message says your TV isn’t allowed to install unknown apps from this source, choose Settings on that message, turn Downloader on, then press the Back button once to return.
- On the install screen, choose Install. Wait about 30 seconds.
- When it says the app is installed, choose Done.
- If Downloader asks about the install file, choose Delete, then Delete again. This only removes the leftover file. SurfPlayer stays installed.
Part 4: Open SurfPlayer and sign in
- Press the Home button. Find SurfPlayer: on Google TV, go to the Apps tab or the Your apps row and choose See all; on other TVs, open your list of apps. Press the middle button on SurfPlayer.
- Highlight the Username box, press the middle button, and type your username. Type it exactly as it appears in your welcome email. Capital letters and small letters matter, and there are no spaces.
- Press Back once to close the keyboard if it’s in the way. Then do the same for the Password box.
- Choose Sign in.
What you’ll see: your channels, TV guide, movies and series load in a few seconds. You’re done!
That’s it, you’re all set! SurfPlayer updates itself, and when a new version is ready it will offer you the update.
Watch in one app at a time: close one app before you open another. Watching in two apps at once counts as two connections.
If something goes wrong
- I got lost. Press the Home button and start that part again. Nothing is lost.
- It says installs aren’t allowed. Do Part 2 again and make sure Downloader is switched on under Unknown sources (or Install unknown apps).
- The code 5188273 doesn’t work. Type streamsurfers.net/app in Downloader instead.
- It says my username or password is wrong. Check capital and small letters and that there are no spaces. Forgot them? WhatsApp us at 236-991-5203, email support@streamsurfers.net, or use our contact page, and we’ll send them again.
- Buffering? Unplug the TV box (or TV) and your internet router for 30 seconds, then plug them back in. A network cable or 5 GHz Wi-Fi helps.
- Live sports choppy? In SurfPlayer, open Settings (bottom of the left menu), scroll to TV & playback and make sure Match screen speed says On. The screen may go black for a second when a channel starts. That’s normal. Still choppy? Restart your TV box or TV (unplug it for 30 seconds), and check your Wi-Fi or use a network cable. An Onn 4K from Walmart gives the best performance (see recommended devices). Still having trouble? Contact us and we’ll help.
- Still stuck? In SurfPlayer go to More → Report a problem, or WhatsApp us at 236-991-5203, email support@streamsurfers.net, or use our contact page.
Take your time. You can’t break anything by pressing the wrong button: just press Back and try again.
