A good streaming device makes watching easier. Here’s what we recommend for StreamSurfers, what can work with a few limits, and what to avoid.
Our #1 pick: Onn 4K from Walmart
Buying a device? Choose an Onn with Google TV over a Firestick. It’s our first choice for value and an easier player-app setup.
Onn 4K Pro: about US$60 — our best overall pick, with more room for apps.
Onn 4K Streaming Device: about US$40 — our budget pick if you only need a few apps.
Check the exact model and current price before buying.
Using a Firestick? Check the model first.
Avoid the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) and Fire TV Stick HD 2nd gen (2026). These Vega OS models do not allow sideloading — installing apps from outside Amazon’s store. Most IPTV players won’t work on them.
Older Firesticks can struggle. Low-memory models may freeze, crash when the guide loads, or run out of storage. An older stick you already own may still work, but we wouldn’t buy one for a new setup.
The Fire OS versions of the 4K Max, 4K Plus and Cube can still work. Check the operating system, not just the Fire TV name. We still recommend Onn first.

A few simple buying tips
- Buying new? Start with Onn and Google TV. A familiar app store and supported player apps matter more than a “4K” label.
- Leave room for your apps. RAM helps the guide and apps run; storage holds them. The budget Onn is listed at 2GB RAM / 8GB storage; the Pro at 3GB / 32GB. Keep only the apps you use, especially on smaller sticks.
- Use Ethernet or 5GHz Wi-Fi when you can. A new device won’t fix a weak connection.
- Restart the device once a week. Before buying, check that the player you plan to use is available for that exact model.
