Short answer: a Roku can’t install the kind of player app StreamSurfers needs. Roku only allows apps from its own Channel Store, and there’s no way to add outside apps like you can on an Onn, Google TV or Firestick. That also goes for TVs with Roku built in (for example many TCL, Hisense and Onn Roku TVs).
The good news: you don’t need a new TV. You have two easy options.
Option 1 (recommended): plug in an Onn 4K
An Onn 4K with Google TV from Walmart (about US$40, or about US$60 for the Pro) plugs into a spare HDMI port on the same TV. Keep your Roku for your other apps, and switch to the Onn for StreamSurfers.
- Plug the Onn into a free HDMI port on your TV and into power.
- Use your TV remote’s Input or Source button to pick that HDMI port. On a Roku TV, the HDMI input shows up as a tile on the Roku home screen.
- Follow the Onn’s on-screen setup (Wi-Fi and Google account).
- Then follow our Onn setup guide to install a player and sign in.

Option 2: mirror from your phone (OK for now, not every day)
You can show your phone’s screen on the Roku. It works in a pinch, but your phone has to stay on and nearby, and the picture can stutter. We don’t recommend it for live sports.
Android phone or tablet
- Set up StreamSurfers on your phone with our Android phone & tablet guide.
- On the Roku, go to Settings → System → Screen mirroring and choose Prompt or Always allow.
- On your phone, swipe down from the top and tap Smart View, Screen cast or Screen mirroring (the name depends on the phone). Pick your Roku.
- Open your player app on the phone and start a channel.
iPhone or iPad
- Set up a player app with our iPhone, iPad & Apple TV guide.
- Many newer Roku models support AirPlay. On the Roku, check Settings → Apple AirPlay and HomeKit. If you don’t see it, your Roku doesn’t support AirPlay.
- On the iPhone, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring and pick your Roku.
What about IPTV apps in the Roku store?
A few playlist apps show up in the Roku Channel Store from time to time. Most can’t sign in with an Xtream Codes login, many don’t show a proper TV guide, and they tend to disappear without warning. We can’t support them, so we don’t recommend relying on one.
