Firestick help

Using an older Firestick? Read this

If SurfPlayer freezes, stutters or feels slow on your Firestick, especially during live sports, you haven't done anything wrong. Try these simple steps in order. Most of the time, one of them fixes it.

Try these steps in order

  1. Update SurfPlayer. In SurfPlayer, open Settings (at the bottom of the left menu) and choose ↻ Check for updates. If a new version is ready, choose to update.
  2. Restart your Firestick. Unplug the Firestick from the power for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and wait for the home screen.
  3. Close other apps. Only open SurfPlayer, and don't leave other apps playing in the background. Restarting the Firestick (step 2) is the easiest way to close everything.
  4. Get a steadier internet connection. Keep the Firestick close to your Wi-Fi router if you can. For the steadiest picture, use an Ethernet adapter for Firestick, so a network cable goes straight from your Firestick to your router.
  5. Lists look wrong? If channels, movies or the TV guide look wrong or are missing, open Settings and, under Playlist, choose ⟳ Refresh playlist & guide now.
  6. Leave Match screen speed on. In Settings, under TV & playback, Match screen speed is on already. Please leave it on. Your screen may go black for a second when a channel starts. That's normal.

Still struggling? It may be the Firestick

Very old Firesticks, like the 2nd generation Fire TV Stick, may not have enough power to play live sports smoothly. Your subscription and your channels are fine. It's the device that's struggling to keep up.

For the best picture, we recommend an Android TV box such as the Onn 4K (Amlogic S905X4, 4GB RAM). A newer Firestick 4K or 4K Max also works well.

Questions

Will I lose my subscription?

No. You keep the same plan and the same login on any device.

Which Firestick do I have?

On your Firestick, go to Settings → My Fire TV → About. The top line shows its name, for example Fire TV Stick 4K or Fire TV Stick Lite.

Which Firesticks are affected?

Mostly older or lower-end models. The Firestick 4K and 4K Max usually do fine. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select can't install outside apps at all.

I upgraded my device. How do I set it up?

Follow our Android TV & Google TV guide for an Android TV box, or our Firestick guide for a Firestick 4K or 4K Max.
